Untitled Poem

When did insults
Become jokes?
When did teasing
Become something to laugh at?

Because that boy you tease
For trying too hard in school
Needs a scholarship
In order to go to college
Since his family
Is barely getting by
In their tiny, cramped apartment
He strives for a better future
For himself and his family

Because that girl you pick on
For having dirty hair
And clothes too worn
Is in a foster home
Dealing with abandonment
And abuse
Full of troubles
You could never imagine

Because that boy
The one you and your friends
Make fun of during class
He lost his dad
Then his mom
Before he could even walk
Before he could even speak
Constantly questioning
The intentions of God
And why he
Should even be alive

Because everyone.
We all have problems
Hidden insecurities and issues
Some are much worse
Than others
But none of them
Deserve to be laughed at
So why don’t people think twice
Before calling names
And being cruel?
Why do we laugh
At insults and humiliations?
Especially because
That person,
The one being teased,
Could be you.

Rollercoaster

First, a steep incline
Seeming never ending
The sky almost in reach

A downward pull
Quick and holding the present
Of fear and whiplash

After the vision is no longer blurred
There is excitement and enjoyment
Happiness and appreciation

Seconds, maybe minutes
And then it is over
As if it never began

Reconstruction

You broke down the walls
Slowly at first,
against resistance
But then all at once
With nothing holding you back

The forces were down
So you let yourself in
Initially, no harm came
But then a sharp turn
Devastation, destruction, desolation
Blood, a new red
The forces were down
The walls completely broken
So you let yourself in
And made everything shatter

But little did you know
That it was stronger
It build itself up
And began reconstruction
With highs and lows
It got there all the same
And what once was broken
Is now back again
Stronger than ever
Yet not back for revenge.

You thought you were better
A Jesus, a saint
That your destruction was for the better
Because in your eyes
Not you but it,
something out of no where to despise,
Was the problem
Because you felt superior
A blessed soul
But look in the mirror
And realize that what you see
Is exactly what you tried to obliterate

Yet again I may state
That there is no revenge
For what you have mistaken
As something lesser and inferior
May actually be superior
Or at least in moral and strength

For those walls that were once broken
Are now standing tall
Stronger than ever
Unbreakable to your touch
Only to others may it again fall

Happiness

The first day of second semester we painted rocks and listened to “calming” music in my English class. I had to think of a word that represented a goal. I chose “happiness” because, like everyone else in the world, I strive to be happy. I chose it over other words because I think it is very important to be happy with your life. I am going to treat this single word like a New Year’s Resolution for 2017 since I want to continue to be happy during this New Year. I plan to achieve this goal by doing things that make me happy and trying to be more optimistic.

Food and Family

Thanksgiving is the day of giving thanks. To most, it is also the day of eating so much food that you feel like you’re going to explode. Every family has different recipes and traditions. My family’s Thanksgiving dinner usually consists of turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, deviled eggs, corn casserole, cranberries, and pie. We usually try a new recipe or two every year as well. We used to have a huge Thanksgiving dinner with the entire family but over the years people started moving away, unable to come. Now, only about half of my family shows up and we eat “dinner” around noon so we can go shopping. I miss the way Thanksgiving was when I was a kid.

Black Friday

With Thanksgiving comes Black Friday. My family has participated in Black Friday for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I would get to stay up late and play games with my family until they left to go shopping. As the years went by they slowly started going earlier and earlier. Next week they will be going during the middle of Thanksgiving! The event is starting to prevent people from having the chance to spend time with their family on Thanksgiving. People could just skip Black Friday but then they wouldn’t be able to get things at such affordable prices. I wish stores would just go back to starting their sales early Friday morning. If they keep starting their sales earlier and earlier each year there is going to be a “Black Wednesday” rather than “Black Friday”!
